1. York Award forms and assessor feedback ready for collection

If you took part in the York Award assessment process this year we now have your original York Award application ready for collection. Please come into Careers to collect it along with all the comments and feedback from the assessors. This is your chance to find out how you performed during the interview – did you wow them? Did your nerves show? Is there anything you could have done better? How well did you meet the criteria in the written application?  There is a lot of really valuable individual feedback available on your performance through the York Award assessment process – call into Careers today to pick it up.

2. Summer vacation careers support

Just a reminder that we will be open during most of the summer vacation. If you are graduating remember that we are still here to help you for as long as you need us.  You will continue to be able to use Careers Gateway to book appointments and view vacancies – and if you move away from York, you can use the online query system to get in touch.  Summer opening hours will be shown on our website.

3. Make the most of your summer

Term ending doesn’t mean you can’t get involved with Careers over summer! With plenty on offer, from paid summer internships through SIB to online resources, making the most of you summer has never been easier! We’ve put together a list of ideas of things to look at or take part in over the vacation to make your summer more valuable. Check out the Careers focus section of our website for ideas of what you can try – whether you’re a first year or a finalist, boosting your skills and experience over summer means you’ll really be getting a head start on setting yourself apart from the crowd!

4. Final year students – Use the Employability Tutorial while you can!

When you graduate, you lose access to the VLE.  Make sure you make use of the Employability Tutorial via the VLE to help you understand the skills you have to offer an employer and how to present them to best effect. Remember, you should have shared your Employability Plan with your Supervisor.  This helps them when writing your future job references!

5. Summer Internships in the York area

Would you like to spend the summer doing a paid internship within the University or within an organisation in York? Not sure where to start? The Student Internship Bureau currently has over 15 internships left for you to apply for. Internships with FERA are still available and many more within the University so make sure you make the most of your summer! For more information on SIB internships and to apply, go to your Careers Gateway and search for Student Internship Bureau. 

6. Plan for your future career with an experienced mentor! 

Applications for the Autumn 2014 Alumni Mentoring Scheme (AMS) are now open.  It may seem a long time away, but it is never too early to start planning! The Autumn term is a critical time for you to take career decisions and prepare for the graduate recruitment cycle.  AMS is a fantastic opportunity for you to develop your career planning with the help of an experienced mentor drawn from the University’s extensive alumni network.  Students from any field of study are encouraged to apply.

You will receive an email by Wednesday 1 October (week 1) of Autumn Term, informing you whether you have been allocated a mentor and inviting you to the briefing session scheduled for Wednesday 8 October (week 2).  Please contact careers@york.ac.uk if you have any questions.

7. The Chopsticks Club – connecting Britain and China

If you have an interest in China, the Chopsticks Club could help you expand your network and find employment.  Its members represent a diverse network of professionals engaged with China and it offers a wide range of activities designed to appeal to both the Chinese and British communities. Events (which are mainly based in London) include speaker evenings, recruitment events, debates, cultural evenings and much more. There is a small charge to join the club – but you can get information about events for free.

The Club will be running THREE separate recruitment events this year for experienced hire and recent graduates. Check website for details.

  • Wednesday 16 July – Luxury Sector – covering Luxury Retail, Hospitality,Travel & Tourism.  Venue: Central London
  • Wednesday 30 July – Engineering – covering Auto, IT, Pharmaceuticals, Food Manufacturing and Construction.  Venue: Midlands
  • Wednesday 15 October – Finance Skills – covering Banking, Insurance, Legal & Accountancy and Property.Venue: Central London

 8. Careers events 16-27 June (Weeks 9 and 10)

  • 16  June – 20 June : York Community Consulting Insight Week – find out more about a career in consulting.
  • 17 June, 12.00pm – 3.00pm: Summer Recruitment Day. A selection of local and national recruitment agencies will be available in Careers, with information on graduate roles and temporary work.
  • 24 June, 11.00am: Graduating with a 2:2, 3rd or Pass.

9. We are on social media

We know that social media is the easiest way to keep up to date with the latest goings-on, which is why we post all of our news and events to our Facebook and Twitter pages, as well as opportunities on Careers Gateway and our blog. Follow us on social media for regular updates from Careers.

10. International students Post-Study Employment and Enterprise Survey

NUS are working with The Entrepreneur’s Network (TEN) to find out more about the experiences of International Students in the UK after they study.  We are looking for international students to share their thoughts and experiences of working and/or setting up a business in the UK.  This survey is for students of all levels at both Higher and Further Education institutions.
