EVENTS
1. Don’t miss our careers fairs this Autumn
Careers in Management and Finance Fair – 14 October, 11:00 to 15:00
Careers in Technology Fair – 15 October, 11:00 to 15:00
Careers in Law Fair – 22 October, 12:00-15:00
Up to 40 organisations will be at each fair with graduate and internship schemes available. Its a great opportunity to meet recruiting companies who are looking to employ York students and graduates.
2. Careers talks and employer presentations
As well as our careers fairs we have also arranged a whole host of careers related events for the Autumn including employer presentations. Why not check out the full programme on our events webpage? Further events will be added throughout the term so keep checking back to see whats new.
3. The Graduate Retail Fair
If you are not attending the University’s Careers in Law Fair on the same day and are interested in a possible career in retail, why not attend The Graduate Retail Fair on Wednesday 22 October 2014 at the Rose Bowl in Leeds. The employers attending the Fair have some exciting career options in a number of different functions within their businesses. The variety of opportunities is open to students from all Universities and degree disciplines; there really is something for everyone. VOLUNTEERING
4. Could you mentor Year 11 girls or deliver schools workshops?
York Students in Schools (YSIS) is recruiting to a range of exciting schools-based volunteering projects, which take place throughout the Autumn and Spring Terms. Working as part of a team, you could volunteer alongside staff from the York Designer Outlet, Northern Rail, or the York Marriott Hotel to deliver interactive workshops in local primary schools around travel, cooking or retail. There is also the opportunity to mentor Year 11 girls at Huntington School. You don’t have to be a budding teacher to get involved; our projects should capture your imagination whatever your interests!

5. Volunteer as a Classroom Assistant in a local school
A York Students in Schools (YSIS) placement provides you with the opportunity to volunteer in schools for a 10-week placement of half a day each week. Applications open from Monday Week 3 to Monday Week 5. If you’re not sure what’s involved, why not attend an Introduction to YSIS session during Week 2 and 3 to find out about the scheme and ask any questions that you might have? Our first session is Tuesday Week 2, 1-2 pm, C/A/102. Visit the YSIS Placement pages to find out more!

Volunteer projects and placements are available now with York Students in Communities. To see the full range of opportunities, download briefs and apply please visit our web pages. Browse through our five interest areas to find an opportunity to suit you, whether it is heritage, conservation, causes, education or young people. Deadline for projects is Wednesday 15 October.
7. Are you fluent in another language
Could you support a school pupil in their native language? Please create a profile on our language support register as schools across York are looking for your help. We are particularly looking for students who speak: Hindi, Turkish, Polish, Russian, Italian and more. Visit our web pages to find out more and register interest.
8. Interested in curating?
If you would like experience with curating a show with York College students, or to help with marketing and events, then you may be interested in a new project. Between now and early November, the volunteers will meet on Friday mornings and Tuesday lunchtimes at York St Marys looking at the Madsen collection there. 9. Go International website launched
This new website is full of information on the benefits of studying, working or volunteering abroad, with advice on how to access the opportunities available, case studies and an explanation of what the next steps are if you are interested in studying or working abroad as part of your degree. Remember that our Global Opportunities Fair on Tuesday 4th November is another easy way to get relevant information about global placement, volunteering and study abroad options.
10. 30 reasons why personal branding will work for you
Personal Branding is a very interesting subject and one that many students find very difficult to assess or implement. We have come across this article which takes a light hearted look at the issue. Decide for yourself if personal branding will work for you.
11. Balancing education and part time work
We understand that it is increasingly necessary for students to take on part-time work during their studies. This You Tube clip may be of interest to those of you balancing the two.

Are you an international student? Have you had a part time job, an internship or taken part in volunteering during your time at York? We are collecting case studies about the activities our international students take part in to inspire current and new international students at York. 22 year old Samir Hamrouni (2nd year BSc Accounting, Business management & Finance) is enjoying commercial success with his creative design business Potentia Design Solutions, thanks to support from the Enterprise team at Careers. Samir began doing creative design work for fun in his spare time, before coming across the Enterprise team in Careers. He bid successfully for a £2,000 grant to turn his hobby into a business and was also offered office space in the Ron Cook Hub. 16. Shift in employer talent spotting
Gone are the days where it is okay to start filling in job applications at the end of your final year and being guaranteed a job because you have a degree. More and more employers are looking to cultivate relationships from first year onwards. It is vital that you attend Careers employer events from year one to get yourself ready for the graduate recruitment cycle or wider graduate employment. In Autumn Term we have three Careers Fairs and numerous employer presentations on campus, so start early and build networks and contacts that will stand you in good stead on graduation.
