Icon-31. WHAT NEXT AFTER THE RECRUITMENT FAIRS…?

 Careers has just delivered three big recruitment fairs and three big chances to meet top employers, interested in recruiting York students, on your doorstep! If you were one of the 2,300+ students who attended Management & Finance Fair, Technology Fair and Law Fair, we hope you found it really useful and picked up some valuable information and insider tips.

If you didn’t make it, you will still find it useful to download each of the fair brochures with details of all recruiters in attendance, from our website. In addition our downloadable information sheet, Graduate Vacancies explains how the graduate job market works, and has lot of advice, suggestions and links to many other vacancy sites.

Having found out who is offering graduate jobs, vacation internships and training opportunities what can you do next to maximise your chances of success?

6 things to do now

  1. Follow your companies of choice on all social media channels – Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, LinkedIn. Employers say that if you follow them for a year on social media you’ll know a great deal about the company that will stand you in good stead at interview
  2. Make sure you look good online – ensure your social media profile is professional and ready for companies to look back at you! Our course, Your Online Brand can help you with this
  3. Research Labour Market Information – to understand the current employment situation and areas of growth
  4. Use all vacancy sources to check out vacancy deadlines – don’t miss the boat; graduate job and internship deadlines come around fast. Check out the company website (URLs of many companies are listed in the fairs’ brochures), social media and vacancy listings for deadlines
  5. Log into Careers Gateway – and use the search and filter functions to search for vacancies. Update your profile to get vacancies sent directly to you via email
  6. Make sure you know how to make a great application

There are always a great number of events taking place on campus to support the development of your employability. Make sure you keep an eye on Careers Events and benefit from all that is on offer!

Tuesday 4th November (Week 6) 4.30pm – 6.00pm, Physics Exhibition Centre

Global Opportunities Fair This event will play host to organisations who can offer you a range of exciting overseas experiences – whether you want to help build a playground in Uganda, Teach Japanese in Tokyo, find a paid science internship in Europe or work in a US summer camp – there is lots for you to explore at our Global Opportunities fair. For a list of the organisations attending and what they might be able to offer to make your overseas adventure happen, check out the website.

Pitching in the Kitchen
Learn about accessing crowdfunding for your ideas/projects/societies from recent York graduate and property entrepreneur Alex Szepietowski and staff at the University, in particular, YuStart and Proof of Concept funding.

Friday 7th November (Week 6)
Deadline for applying for volunteering opportunities with York Students in Communities. Develop your employability as you build skills and experience, and have fun at the same time through a wide variety of opportunities. Whether that be as a storyreader, charity team leader, eco volunteer and lots more. See the website for details.

Tuesday 18th November (Week 8)
L’Oreal’s Brandstorm business competition launch
Put yourself in the shoes of a L’Oréal International Marketing Director for a six-month long marketing journey, coached by top L’Oréal executives through a real life challenge. Analyse market trends and performance and consider retail design, animation and education in order to propose innovative services and attract new customers to the brand in the travel distribution channel (airports, airlines, ferries, cruises, duty-free shops, etc.). Wednesday 19th November (Week 8), 1-4pm, RCH/037, Ron Cooke Hub
Assessment Centre Activity Day
Are you preparing for an assessment centre, or planning on applying for a graduate job or internship scheme? This is your chance to put questions to a panel of top graduate recruiters then try your hand in some tasks through our assessment centre simulation afternoon.  Search for this event in the Careers Gateway.

Draw on the experience of a York graduate to help you plan your career
Careers run a mentoring scheme which is open to both undergraduates and postgraduates. We put you in touch with a York gradauate who will be in contact with you throughout the Spring term with the aim of helping you explore career options, identify areas for development and support you in career planning. Sleigh bells at the ready…Wednesday week 9 sees the return of the University’s Christmas Market! Now’s the time to start thinking what to sell – festive gifts and presents always go down a treat. Icon-33. OUT AND ABOUT ON CAMPUS

 This term, you’ll be seeing a lot more of Careers out and about on campus, through our Brand Ambassadors and through our brand new Careers Lounges.

Meet our new Brand Ambassadors
We’re welcoming four new additions to the Careers team, as this term’s Brand Ambassadors get started in their new roles. Students Lucy, Emily, Rachel and Serife have been out and about on campus since last week. They’ll be heading out to speak to you about anything and everything careers related, from your career plans to events you might be interested it, as well as running some social media features, so keep an eye out for those! Spot them in their lime green hoodies during the week, in a range of locations on campus – they’ll also be tweeting using the hashtag #CareersOnCampus.

Careers Lounges
New this term, Careers Lounges are an informal opportunity to meet with a Careers Adviser and your fellow students, hosted in College common rooms (but open to all!). Grab a coffee and join us to have the chance to explore a particular topic (this term’s focus is on CVs), ask questions, discuss alternative approaches and learn from each other with the support from the Careers Adviser. The Careers Lounges are being piloted initially in Vanbrugh, James, Langwith and Constantine Colleges, but please do come along even if you aren’t a member of one of these colleges. The first Careers Lounge took place in Vanbrugh College during Week 4 and proved to be extremely popular, so make sure you sign up to one of the remaining lounges via Careers Gateway to guarantee your place:

Langwith College: Tues Week 5, 5.30 – 6.30pm James College: Thurs Week 6, 1 – 2pm Constantine College: Tues Week 7, 5 – 6pm

Careers Advisers also run loads of great tailored departmental events each term, so keep an eye on the events listings page of the Careers website to see what’s going on in your department this term.

 A recent report highlighted the fact that young people who study or get work experience abroad not only gain knowledge in specific subjects but they also significantly strengthen their global awareness and key transferrable skills – meaning they fare much better in the job market

Read on for our digest of all things international from Careers!

New for 2014: Goinglobal is a fantastic online resource now available to York students to help you find out about working all over the world. You can access it from the International Work page on our website and find detailed information in 41 country guides which are constantly updated, as well as key employer listings, jobs, internships, city guides, work permits and visas and lots more.

GradlinkUK is an online resource developed primarily to help international students connect with employers and find work in their home country. With Canada now added to the list of countries available, you can now find great careers information about working in China, Malaysia, India, and Africa as well as Canada.

Our web pages for international students are now bigger and better than ever! We’ve listened to the key questions you ask us about working in the UK before and after studies, finding work in your home country and going on to further studies and structured our pages around answering these questions. You can now read case studies of international graduates working in the UK on Tier 2 visa, find out how many Tier 2 visas were issued in the UK last year, read about what options are available to you to remain in the UK long term or short term.

We are also developing more information to help you if you are job hunting in your home country. We currently have a focus on China and will add information about other countries over the coming year. Access Tier 5 presentation for international students, 12 November, 1pm – 2pm
If you are an international student thinking about your options to stay in the UK at the end of your course to get work experience this talk will help you understand how you can do this under Tier 5 of the government’s immigration rules. This is a bookable event – you can find full details and book your place via Careers Gateway.

Our colleagues in the Centre for Global Progammes can also help you get overseas experience through its Erasmus programmes, international study centres and world wide exchange programme.   Staff from the centre will be available to talk to at our Global Opportunities Fair on 4 November.

5. WHAT’S NEW IN CAREERS

 Recommended books
Did you know that in Careers we have a reference book section? We have up to date titles covering the job-hunting and application process, career planning, working and studying abroad, self-employment, plus specific titles relating to many career occupations. Over the summer we have added to our reference library and have lots of new titles including:

  • Developing employability for business
  • Confidence at work
  • com: manage your online self, image and business success
  • Work your way around the world

Plus many many more….

Our book collection can be viewed and searched via the University Library catalogue or come in to see what we have. Our information room is a quiet space with comfy chairs and PCs with internet access and a printer and we’re open between 10:00 and 17:00 every weekday. Come and see us!

Catch up on recent careers talks
If you’ve missed one of our recent events or talks, you can now catch up by accessing our virtual presentations online. Audio recordings and presentation slides are now available on the Careers website so you can listen back. All you need is a PC with speakers and a quiet room or set of headphones.
