It’s becoming more and more apparent that work experience is essential to getting a job after you graduate – in fact, over 50% of Times Top 100 Employers say that candidates with no previous work experience have ‘little to no chance of receiving a job offer’ with their organisation. Similarly, over 1/3 of graduate jobs are filled by candidates who completed a student internship with the company.

Careers is keen to support students looking for work experience, and that’s why this term, we’re running a #YouNeedWorkExperience campaign, focusing on all things work experience; what counts as work experience, how to find it at York and what effect it could have on your future job prospects. Get ahead and start thinking about your experience now – visit www.york.ac.uk/careers/experience for tips, support and information. In addition to this, every Wednesday of Summer Term our social media will be dedicated to #WorkExperienceWednesday, with handy tips and advice for getting work experience. There’s even a competition running! Make sure you follow us on Twitter and like our Facebook page to get involved in the campaign.

    Come and hear short talks from a fascinating range of employment sectors including Youth Work, Charities, Policing, Social Work, NHS Management, Policy Research and Probation.  Talk to the speakers afterwards at an informal drinks reception.  Departmental postgraduate admissions officers will also be at the drinks reception to answer any questions about further study.
    Open to all Sociology, Social Policy, Social Political; Science and Politics students.  No need to book, just come along.

Working in Research

A career in research isn’t restricted to academia. Working in Research, on Thursday 30 April, 6.15 – 8.30pm, offers you the chance to hear from and speak to a panel of professionals (including York alumni) working in research roles across the academic and business worlds. Roles include social research, TV research, public sector, industry, academia and more!

Come along for a Q&A session followed by a drinks reception, to hear how the professionals started out in their careers, what work experience they required, and their tips and insights for entering their roles and sectors. For anyone interested in finding out what a career in research might entail, or for those already working in research who want to make connections in the field, this is an unmissable event. Volunteer in a local school with York Students in Schools (YSIS)
YSIS placements are suitable for anyone with the enthusiasm to volunteer in a school. Applications for Autumn term ’15 will open in Week 3 of summer term. Join us for an introductory session Thursday 23rd April at 3pm in V/123, or check out our website for more details.

YSIS Block Placements
YSIS block placements are ideal for students who have already completed a YSIS placement or have applied for a PGCE or teacher training and are looking for a more challenging role.  Block placements take place in weeks 9 and 10 of summer term. Apply from week 1 via the website.

Looking for paid work experience in the York area over the summer vacation?
Careers has started to advertise over 120 project based internships with local businesses through the Student Internship Bureau. Employers we’ll be advertising for over the coming weeks include: Network Rail, the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, City of York Council, Rural Action Yorkshire, York Metrics… and many, many more! Log onto Careers Gateway and click on the ‘SIB Internships’ tab. Internships are only advertised for around 2 weeks, so make sure you are application ready by reading the SIB’s online tips! Keep up to date with new opportunities by liking  the SIB’s Facebook page

Charity marketing and volunteer management opportunities with York Cares 
York Cares is a local employee-volunteering charity, bringing businesses, employees and communities together to make York a better place. Voluntary roles available to support the charity’s press, publicity and social media or to support volunteer recruitment and management for York Children’s University and Team Challenges.

Competitions closing soon!
Don’t forget that Careers‘ two competitions, Plan ENVY, and the Freelance Challenge close this term. The University’s business plan competition, Plan ENVY, closes on Friday 1st May (week 3), whilst the Freelance Challenge closes on Friday 29th May (week 7). Prizes total more than £4,000!
