What’s the difference between jobs in advertising and those in marketing? What opportunities are there for graduates in the criminal justice system? Who works in the health sector, other than doctors and nurses?

Find out the answers to these and more at this term’s Working in… event, which offers an insight into three exciting and varied sectors:

• Advertising, marketing and PR
• Health
• Criminal justice system.

So what happens at the Working in… event and what are the benefits of going along?

First of all, it’s a great opportunity to meet people who are working in a variety of roles within these sectors. You can read lots of background information about different careers and sectors, but speaking to those who are actually doing the jobs gives you a deeper insight into what the work is really like. It’s a chance to ask those questions that employer websites and generic careers information just don’t answer.

Question and answer panel sessions start the evening, followed by the chance to chat informally with the speakers and other professionals in these three sectors.

Many of the practitioners attending are York graduates, so they know what it’s like to be in your position. This is an added bonus as York alumni are a very friendly bunch, ready to help with their knowledge and experience.

Although many people fear the dreaded word, ‘networking’, coming along to the Working in… event can help you make contacts and meet some potentially useful people. The purpose of the evening is not to offer jobs to students, but to help inform and offer advice. You never know the professionals you chat to on the night may turn out to be useful contacts in the future.
