You may have noticed three high-profile recruitment fairs on campus during recent weeks, but did you know there’s a whole lot of other careers events that run throughout the term, every term? Here’s a run down of our what’s on page.

Employer presentations

Graduate recruiters are always keen to visit campus and get the chance to talk to students, so you can have the opportunity to listen to what employers are offering in the way of internships and graduate roles.

These are a perfect chance to find out more about a company – particularly the things that their websites don’t tell you, such as what a typical day is like, what appealed to current employees about the company, what it’s really like. Listening to those who work there can often inspire, ignite your interest and bring to life the work, much better than a website can.

Check Careers Gateway or the events programme for details of who’s on campus and when.

Other types of jobs

You may not realise it, but the Autumn graduate recruitment cycle is not typical of all types of companies and sectors/industries. The large graduate recruiting companies visit campus for recruitment fairs and employer presentations, but other sectors and smaller businesses don’t recruit in the same way. They don’t recruit in large numbers and/or they may be so popular they don’t have to visit universities to get the candidates they want.

If you’d like to know more about other sectors, like media, heritage, research, not-for-profit, look out for the Working in… events – typically available in the Spring Term. These are perfect opportunities to speak to people (often York graduates) who are working in different sectors and find out how they got in and what the jobs are really like.

Look out for this Spring’s Working in… events on Careers Gateway, the Careers Facebook page and the events programme.

Departmental events

Careers works closely with academic departments and often offer and support additional events for students in particular subject areas. Events may include:

• CV workshops for individual degree disciplines
• Interview skills sessions
• Drop-in careers advice appointments
• Competitions and business games
• Pre-placement preparation
• Networking opportunities with York alumni

Check with your department for what’s coming up or click on our events programme and look for the departmental events section.

Skills courses

Employer-led, these courses concentrate on particular skills, which are vital in the world of work and beyond. Ideal if you want to develop or strengthen your skills, there is a variety on offer, including:

• Networking
• Numerical reasoning
• Project management
• Counselling skills
• Ethics in business
• Social enterprise

Courses vary each term, as do the length of each course. They are bookable from two weeks before the start. For full details of courses, visit the skills courses web page.
