So you’re thinking about getting involved in some volunteering? Fantastic! But now you need to make that first step, which can feel a little overwhelming. Here are some top tips to find a role that’s right for you, and secure that opportunity:
Your interests
What do you care about? If you like the idea of volunteering, but have no idea what to apply for- that’s more than okay. The great thing about volunteering is that you can find out what you enjoy, have a go at something new, or throw yourself into a cause you’re passionate about.
Your goals
If there is something particular you’d like to gain from volunteering, it’s handy to keep this in mind. You might want to gain experience in a particular field, learn a new skill, or simply give your time to make a difference. Volunteering is also a great way to meet new people, make friends, and support your wellbeing. No reason is more valid than another, and it’s your role: make sure it works for you.

Your time
All of our roles are part time and flexible, to help you manage your time with your studies and other commitments. It’s still good to think about how much time you’d like to give to a role, and when you’d ideally like to start. Many roles are recruited for a term in advance, so plan ahead for a role that fits with your timeline.
Finding a role
The best place to start is our Volunteering webpages, where you can read about our different types of opportunities. All of our roles are advertised on Handshake from around the start of each term, so login to get familiar with browsing roles. It can also be handy to sign up to our mailing list here to get updates about new roles.
Applying
We often have students ask us what experience they need to secure a particular role, but the good news is that you don’t need to have any particular experience to get involved with volunteering, just enthusiasm and an interest in the subject area! Most roles require you to complete an application form, and questions might include why you’re interested and what you can bring. This is a great chance to practice writing applications, so check out our application webpages for guidance.
